The sentence appears beneath the name, inside the platform and across Department records: NOT APPROVED FOR PUBLIC USE. It sounds like a warning because it is designed like one. But it is not a declaration of danger. It is a declaration of independence.
APPROVAL IS NOT THE OBJECTIVE
Most creative projects are expected to become immediately understandable. They need a category, an audience, a familiar aesthetic and a short explanation. They are adjusted until they can be approved by platforms, markets and public expectations.
UNAUTHORIZED DEPARTMENT was created from the opposite position. The project does not reject quality, structure or responsibility. It rejects the idea that every decision must be made easier, safer or more familiar simply to receive approval.
PUBLIC USE
Public use represents mass acceptance. It is the stage where an idea becomes neutral enough to work for everyone. Its edges disappear. Its language becomes generic. Its identity becomes easier to distribute but harder to recognise.
The Department does not need to be inaccessible, but it must remain specific. The objective is not exclusion for its own sake. The objective is to prevent the project from becoming indistinguishable from everything around it.
UNAUTHORIZED DOES NOT MEAN UNCONTROLLED
Independence without discipline produces noise. The Department operates through rules, records, clearances and internal systems because creative freedom becomes more valuable when it is supported by structure.
Unauthorized does not mean careless. It means the project was not created by a committee, approved by an institution or designed to meet an existing definition. The work still needs to be precise. Products still need to function. Images still need intention. Members still need responsibility.
A PERMANENT WARNING LABEL
The phrase functions as a reminder: do not release work simply because it is finished; do not keep an idea simply because time was invested in it; do not follow a visual direction only because it is currently popular; do not confuse public attention with cultural value.
Every Department record should be capable of standing without explanation. If it requires approval to exist, it was never ready.
